It's #EndangeredSpeciesDay, so we'd like to raise awareness and showcase the wonderful Hen Harriers that live here on the Swinton Estate. Driven to extinction in Britain in the 19th century and then recolonized in the 1960s, Hen Harriers are still one of the most endangered breeding birds in the UK. Frank the Hen Harrier was first spotted on the Swinton Estate in December 2018, and Natural England has been tracking his behaviour and flight patterns throughout this time, with the assistance of a tracker and regular sightings reported by the Estate’s gamekeepers. The Moorland Association has championed efforts to help re-establish a breeding population of Hen Harriers in England since 2016, with other conservation partners. In partnership with the Moorland Association, back in 2022 the Swinton Estate unveiled the first webcam in England to live stream a rare Hen Harrier Nest, which you can watch at https://lnkd.in/e9S__jaX We are proud to have received awards from Red List Revival, with the Estate ranking in the top 1% of UK landholdings for its breeding of the Hen Harrier population and in the 10% nationally for curlew protection.

The Swinton Estate Sustainability Committee had an informative day out of the office visiting the Allerton Waste Recovery Park on Wednesday. Controlling what goes into our different waste streams is of paramount importance in our sustainability drive, in reducing the need for landfill. Allerton Waste Recovery Park’s measures and initiatives are impressive. For example: ● Sorting ‘black bag’ waste using mechanical treatment technology to extract and recycle items. ● Processing around 40,000 tonnes of food and organic waste each year to generate renewable energy. ● Using the remaining non-recyclable waste to generate enough energy to power at least 40,000 homes. A team of Swinton Estate employees recently had the privilege of working with The Woodland Trust’s Veteran Tree Verifiers and Recorders, to measure and record trees in the grounds of Swinton Park Hotel and Deer Park. These have now been added to the Woodland Trust's Ancient Tree Inventory. The Deer Park is rich in veteran oaks, sycamore and chestnuts, with woodland around the hotel being home to impressive beech and veteran yews trees. Out of 72 trees recorded so far on the Swinton Estate, 45 are ‘veterans’, 3 are marked ‘ancient’ and the remaining 24 are ‘notable’ trees. There are also a significant number of non-native conifers in the areas around Coffin Lake, which represent very early plantings of these species. The size of these conifers is such that they can be separately listed by the Tree Register as ‘Yorkshire Champion’ trees. Our ancient trees not only provide perfect homes for thousands of rare species of plants, animals, invertebrates, and fungi, they are also an integral part of our heritage, and this survey takes us one step closer to giving them the protection they need.   Many thanks to all the Woodland Trust Tree Verifiers, Recorders, and members of the Swinton team who provided invaluable assistance with data collection and measurements on what was quite a chilly day!
